It seems like a long time coming for fans of the sci-fi epic The Expanse. But soon, you’ll be able to watch The Expanse season 3 in all its space filled glory. Earlier in the year we announced that Amazon had secured the rights from Netflix (and original broadcasters Syfy). It seems like The Expanse is going to be a mainstay for the streaming big boys.
Seasons 1 and 2 of The Expanse have been available to watch on Amazon Prime Video for a while now. But the third iteration was mysteriously left out on the site. Now it’s clear that Amazon Studios are keen to use the launch of season 3 as a bit of publicity for the fourth season of The Expanse, which should be hitting screens in 2019 (Gizmodo).
So, when will you be able to get your hands on the new season? Well pretty shortly actually; Amazon have announced a release date of February 8th, 2019. The news was released today by Deadline and frankly we couldn’t be more excited.
As for The Expanse season 4, one thing we know for certain is that it will be streamed exclusively by Amazon. Most of the actors and crew were keen to come back on board for the show, simply because they think it’s a great project.
It’s going to be, I think, terrific for the show, because we don’t have language restrictions, we don’t have nudity restrictions, we don’t have all of these things that conspire a lot of times to make, especially genre shows, not feel as adult as they should be. Not to feel real. In my mind, it sort of infantilises genre [TV series] even more so. But that goes away on Amazon.
Showrunner Naren Shankar explaining how excited he is to work with Amazon.
After Syfy decide against renewing the show for a fourth season, fans took to social media with the #SaveTheExpanse campaign to try and grap Amazon’s attention. So often these campaigns fail but once in a while one is successful! It clearly looks to have worked this time, as they’ve invested heavily in the future of the series. As soon as any word on The Expanse season 4 premiere date gets out, we’ll be sure to let you know.
