The mastermind behind classics such as ‘An Idiot Abroad’ and ‘The Office’ is back with a brand new show. Ricky Gervais is known for many things, one of which is bringing Karl Pilkington into the world, another is being a very risqué comedian. The shows which he’s produced over the years, along with his partner in crime Stephen Merchant, have been second to none. Now he’s got a new one, called After Life.
Karl Pilkington’s latest TV effort Sick of It elicited a positive response from both critics and fans alike. Pilkington got his debut in a real acting role (not counting Idiot Abroad) in Gervais’ Channel 4 series ‘Derek’. Gervais also starred in this project – in which he was able to display his acting chops. In this new show ‘After Life’ he’ll be playing a character named Tony.
Destroyed by the death of his wife, Tony’s once perfect life is suddenly turned on its head. After contemplating taking his own life, he decides against it – instead promising to exact his vengeance out on the world around him. Becoming nihilistic and reckless is a dangerous combination for anyone, especially if used to conceal real emotions. His new outlook becomes difficult to maintain once he realises everyone in his life is trying to save him, the old him.
The casting for dark comedy After Life will ring a few bells for anyone who’s seen some previous Gervais projets. Alongside him is Kerry Godliman (Bad Move) as Tony’s wife; Tom Basden (Plebs) plays Tony’s brother-in-law, Matt; Tony Way (Game of Thrones) as best friend Lenny; David Bradley (Broadchurch) is Tony’s dad and Ashley Jensen (Catastrophe) his nurse.
There’ve been a few big announcements regarding the show lately, including a premiere date. Netflix have scheduled After Life in on the 8th March, 2019. The photos seen in this article are all new to boot. Despite being termed a Netflix Original, it’s been produced by Derek Productions (Gervais’ company). We’re excited to see if this will live up to the lofty heights of all his previous projects. Stay tuned for more info.
