What is STARZPLAY?
I don’t blame you if you haven’t heard of STARZPLAY before. It’s only been around in the UK for a few months. But it looks like it’s here to stay. Starz is a US TV network which is owned by Lionsgate. Now it’s been made available abroad for the first time by Amazon.
It branched out to British and German audiences on May 24th, 2018 and is only available to prime members. Home to a number of ‘Starz Originals’, it’s the only place in the UK where certain series can be streamed. Here’s what Chris Albrecht, Starz President and CEO, had to say about its launch.
“The launch of STARZPLAY on Amazon in the UK and Germany marks a significant expansion of the STARZ platform into the global market, providing an exciting opportunity for us to build on the success of our relationship with Amazon Prime Video Channels”
What’s available on STARZPLAY?
The most important part of any streaming service is, of course, the content that they provide. And recently, STARZPLAY has been responsible for some hit shows. Being owned by Lionsgate, they also have a slew of popular movies available to subscribers. We’ve outlined a few of the best below:
Counterpart – Counterpart is possibly STARZPLAY’s biggest series, featuring the excellent J. K. Simmons the show delivers a powerful yet perfectly paced sci-fi thrill.
Castle Rock – Castle Rock is the psychological horror TV show based on classic stories from Stephen King.
The Royals – The Royals, which stars Elizabeth Hurley, is a fictional soap opera based on the British royal family.
The Hunger Games – All three Hunger Games films are available on STARZPLAY. Based on the iconic teenage books, Jennifer Lawrence’s portrayal of Katniss Everdeen is largely responsible for the actresses’ widespread fame today.
Sweetbitter – Sweetbitter is a drama TV show, starring Ella Purnell, which explores a young woman’s inexplicably crazy work life in a New York restaurant.
How to watch STARZPLAY in the UK
STARZPLAY is available on the Amazon Prime Video platform, although it’s not part of the basic subscription cost. It can be added for an additional £4.99 per month – which, depending on the shows you watch may or may not be worth it. Having it available as part of the Amazon service does make for a good user experience however. You can sign up to it here.
Until recently watching STARZPLAY via Amazon was the only option available to would-be users. However, all that has changed today! As of 9th January, 2019 the streaming option will be provided to Virgin Media TV customers for the first time ever. Costing the same as via Amazon (£4.99), those with a Virgin Media box can now access all the exclusive content. To do so, users must press Home on their V6 remote, then clicking On Demand followed by Box Sets.
“The partnership with Virgin Media is an exciting next step in the rollout of the STARZPLAY platform, expanding the audience for our wide range of STARZ Originals, TV series and movies exclusively available on STARZPLAY to a whole new and expansive customer base,”
said Chris Albrecht, President and CEO of Starz.
This is big rollout news for UK viewers and we’re hoping more people will be able to access some of the quality content available. Let us know if you’re excited to get stuck into any of these shows.
