American Idol is a talent show in the U.S., contestants compete for the chance to win a guaranteed recording contract with Hollywood Records and a cash prize of $250,000. The shows format is created by Simon Fuller who created the ‘Idol’ format originally in the UK under the name Pop Idol. Pop Idol was broadcast in the UK before X Factor (Simon Cowell appeared on both), when X Factor was created years later there was a legal dispute between Simon Fuller and Simon Cowell, claiming Simon Cowell infringed on Simon Fuller’s trademark. Don’t feel too bad for Simon Fuller though as before Pop Idol in the UK we had Popstars. Popstars also had a legal dispute with Simon Fuller’s Pop Idol over Popstars intellectual property.
