The X Factor is a UK talent show, similar to Britain’s Got Talent but purely for singing. 4 celebrity judges (with some musical background or relation to music) travel to locations across the country to judge thousands of contract hungry singers.
The show consists of multiple rounds, which progress to rounds at the judges “houses” and eventually into live shows. The winner wins a £1 million contract to the Syco Music label (Simon Cowell’s joint venture with Sony Music), in which usually their debut song hits the number 1 spot on UK charts.
December 2009 a viral campaign got Rage Against the Machine’s explicit “Killing In The Name” to number 1 over Joe McElderry’s “The Climb”.
