Here’s something you don’t hear everyday, Netflix have cancelled a Marvel TV show ahead of it’s third season. The victim? Iron Fist – which is sure to be met with both glee and disappointment due to its polarising reception. The show’s first season has some of the worst reviews of any Marvel TV series, but its recently released second effort was markedly better. With Iron Fist cancelled however, it’s the last we’ll see on Netflix for the moment.
Iron Fist’s title character, played by Finn Jones, was subject to much scrutiny initially. Following it’s premiere, we saw Iron Fist once again in the The Defenders, which garnered him a much more appreciable backstory and a bigger fan acceptance. Iron Fist season 2 was also full of changes, M. Raven Metzner replaced Scott Buck as showrunner, and the series went down a lot better. But it wasn’t enough to stop the inevitable Iron Fist cancellation.
“Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners,”
said Netflix and Marvel Television in a joint statement on Deadline after the Iron Fist cancelled news,
“We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal ‘Iron Fist‘ will live on.”
I think the key thing to take way from this is “Iron Fist will live on”, clearly stating that the character isn’t gone forever. We also very aware of the news that Disney are pulling all their original content from Netflix in the upcoming months and putting it on their own service. The most notable addition to the service is undoubtedly the new Star Wars blockbuster, The Mandalorian. Is it likely that we see Iron Fist being brought back to life here in the future? Only time will tell.
A number of the cast have responded to the Iron Fist cancellation with posts on social media, here’s Finn Jones’ Instagram post:

Jessica Henwick has also taken to Twitter to let the fans know how much their support meant to her:

Although this is a big shock to some Iron Fist lovers, Marvel fans alike have a lot to look forward to on Netflix. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and The Punisher have all been deemed safe for the moment. And with the release of a Daredevil season 3 trailer, there’s a lot to get stuck into.
