On the German-Austrian border, a symbolically arranged corpse is found on a mountain pass. The German investigative authorities send young dedicated Commissioner Ellie Stocker, for whom this case is the first major challenge of her career, alongside the cynical and less committed inspector Gedeon Winter, who shows little interest in cooperation.
As soon as further symbolically arranged corpses are found, it becomes clear that they have a serial killer on their hand. With their victims, the killer leaves the message “The red season comes”, stylised as Krampus, who punishes society for their sins. The pressure on Stocker and Winter to stop the offender increases. In their investigations, the pair penetrate ever deeper into the dark valleys, the archaic customs of the region and the delusional world of the murderer.
